Summer Energy Saving Tips

WOW! Summer has quickly arrived in Happy Valley. Last week gave us a taste of what is coming over the next few months. The question is – are you ready?

When the hot air arrives for good and our air conditioning units are running non stop, often we begin to think about our energy bills.

Check out these energy saving tips to help you through the hot summer months.

1: Find a comfortable temperature! Sure you want to feel comfortable in your home. However, there is no need to pull out the winter coat while your AC is running. Find a temperature that is just right… meaning not too hot or too cold. Here’s a rule of thumb for you: The closer you can keep the indoor temperature to the outdoor temperature, the lower your cooling bill.

2: Keep the temperature of your home warmer than usual when you are away. Whether you are at work for the day or on vacation, it’s a great idea to install a programmable thermostat. This makes adjusting the temperature easy and something you don’t need to think about! Check one thing off your to do list 🙂

3: Stop setting your thermostat to colder! When you set the temperature to very cold, this doesn’t cool your house any faster than the normal setting. This actually results in excessive cooling and an increase in your energy bill.

4: Limit oven cooking! When there is a very hot and humid day, avoid cooking in the oven. Instead, use a grill outside or your microwave.

5: Your lighting matters! Did you know that energy efficient lighting runs much cooler? Incandescent lights create heat. Interesting fact: Approximately 15% of the electricity used in these lights creates light. The rest is transformed into heat.

6: Take the time to ensure your house is air tight! Weather stripping and caulking to seal leaky windows and doors is not only for winter! It is also a great way to help save on energy costs during the summer months too.

7: Vacuum any of your registers! This helps remove the buildup of dust. Also, make sure that objects such as furniture are not blocking the airflow from your registers so the cool air has room to circulate.

8: Schedule regular maintenance for your AC equipment.
